Town of Dedham – Town Green Groundbreaking Ceremony

Town of Dedham – Town Green Groundbreaking Ceremony

On May 16, 2024, the Town of Dedham broke ground on an exciting town center parcel. The “Town Green” project will repurpose the site of the former Police Station, redeveloping it into a green space in an urban setting with amenities for community gatherings, enhancing walkability and connectivity, and supporting local businesses. This project is the result of successful collaboration between the Town Green Working Group, residents, businesses, and other stakeholders.

“It was just under four years ago that the Dedham Square Planning Committee began researching options for this space, and here we are today breaking ground on making that vision a reality,” said Jessica Porter, Vice Chair of the Planning Board in Dedham. “And now it will live on for future generations.”

TEC, Inc. was pleased to participate in the ceremony alongside other consultant team members. TEC provided extensive assistance in applying for over a dozen grants, which garnered critical fiscal support and allowed the project to move forward. Additionally, TEC provided civil engineering, stormwater management, and other engineering support to the lead designer, Halvorson Design.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by many dignitaries, stakeholders and community members, despite the rainy weather, which is an indication of the impact this project has already had on the community and the positive support it has received.

“The Town Green provides an area for visitors to rest and relax, and a place that’s safe, comfortable, and a beautiful park in the heart of our downtown,” said Representative Paul McMurtry. “A space and a place that we can all be proud of, … [the Town Green] delivers a much-needed economic boost to the deserving merchants, residents, and businesses, and a beautiful new destination for all to enjoy.”

Senator Michael Rush was also in attendance to support this important project. “Those of us who live within the 128 beltway can’t understate the importance of green space,” he said. “It is good for our physical health, our mental health, our emotional health, and to have a downtown area actually be expanding greenspace instead of taking it away is nothing short of phenomenal.”

Once completed, the Town Green will be a signature public open space ready for passive recreation, pop up areas for artists, a catalyst for civic gatherings, and more. There was significant consideration for sustainable design in this project as well. We are proud of TEC’s involvement with this transformative space, which will encourage outdoor recreation, sustainably manage stormwater, and improve accessibility. Construction is anticipated to take approximately six months to be fully complete, and we look forward to a ribbon cutting ceremony upon final completion in Spring of 2025.
